Eric Ravilious Eric Ravilious produced the ‘High Street’ series of lithographs between 1936 and 1937 in collaboration with the Curwen Press, by drawing the images directly on the stone. This process allowed for colour printing and a more painterly approach than the wood engravings for which he is better known. They were published in book form in 1938 in an initial run of 2000 copies. He deliberately chose old fashioned businesses for their ornate decoration - they depict the very essence of 30’s England and are tinged with nostalgia. Several of the lithographs from this series were exhibited at the Imperial War Museum for their ‘Imagined Realities’ show in 2003. Unfortunately the original lithographic plates were destroyed in the Blitz, but they have now been reproduced as giclees, printed onto 100% cotton rag in a limited edition of 850.
