This process is ideal for framing 3D items such as medals or football shirts. It involves separating the glass from the artwork or object by means of spacers (referred to either as fillets or slips). These can be made from mountboard or timber(plain or paper wrapped) Flat artwork can also be box framed, however trapping artwork directly under the slip is only desirable under certain conditions. Drymounted photos and prints are fine, but if the work itself is loose paper it can, unless supported, belly outwards and crease unexpectedly under the trapped edges. The moulding used needs to be of sufficient depth to accomodate the items being framed, but should it be necessary a subframe can be constructed to increase the depth.
