glazing

float glass
So called becuse it is manufactured using the Pilkington float system, whereby molten glass is floated on top of molten tin to create a perfectly uniform flat finish.  Typically we use 2mm float glass, however for frames larger than a metre in width, 3mm float should be used as it is less likely to flex and break, however there will be increased weight.

low reflect glass
This type of glass is designed to allow a wide viewing angle under harsh lighting conditions. It is especially suitable for artwork that has large flat areas of dark colour, which under float glass would have a mirror effect. There are two types of low reflect (or non glare) glass; etched and coated. The former is acid etched on one or both sides which diffuses the reflected light and gives a matte finish. Single sided etched glass has greater clarity than double sided. Coated glass has the greatest clarity with the lowest reflectance and highest light transmission.

  • True Vue Reflection Control is float glass that is finely etched on one side only. It can be used over double mounts with minimal loss of contrast. It should be noted that if the artwork is further away from the glass than this, there will be a noticeable softening or greying of the artwork, therefore it is not suitable for box framing.
  • Denglas Water white is a float glass that is coated with the same metallic oxides used on binoculars and camera lenses, giving optimum clarity and zero colour shift to the artwork. It dramatically reduces surface reflections to <1% with light transmission over 98%, it is the clearest picture glass available. The term water white refers to float glass that has very low levels of the metallic impurities that give standard float glass its slight green tinge.

UV filtering glass
This glass is optically coated to protect artwork from the damaging effects of ultra violet light such as colour fading and paper deterioration which is irreversible.

  • TrueVue Conservation glass is a  2.5mm float glass with a UV filter coating on one side filtering out 97% of UV rays. It is available in clear, diffused (etched on one side to give diffused reflection) and museum (with a low reflect optical coating).
  • Mirogard Plus is a 2mm anti reflective water white glass with 84% UV filtration. It has the best UV filtration on a water white glass with excellent clarity, high light transmission and zero colour shift.

acrylic
Plexiglass (ultra clear acrylic) is useful for framing items where safety is an issue for instance in hotels or public places.  There is also a weight advantage when framing larger items. The downside is that acrylic scratches more easily than glass, and is also prone to static build up which makes it unsuitable for glazing pastel or chalk artwork.
Artwork may be sandwiched between two pieces of perspex, the back piece may be clear, opaque, or coloured as a stylish alternative to the clip frame. Chrome or brass studs are used to fix the pieces together.

  • TrueVue AR Acrylic is a 3mm clear acrylic with a low reflect optical coating. It has a low static and increased scratch resistance.
  • TrueVue AR UV acrylic, as above but with 98% UV filtration.
mirror

mirror glass
We can supply a range of mirror glass, which may be bespoke framed in any moulding.  It should be noted that bevelled mirors are only available in standard sizes.
